Pre-Recorded Webinar: The Pelvic Floor, the Diaphragm, the Core and their Role in Postural Development in Children

Dawn Sandalcidi PT, RCMT, BCB-PMD

Regular $250.00

Do you address core strengthening?

Do you ever feel like you’re not quite hitting on the right exercises or activities
to resolve the long-standing issue as completely as you would like?

There is more at play than you might think!

The pelvic floor muscles, in addition to the muscles of the diaphragm and rib cage, work together to support the core musculature in maximizing postural stability. During this course, you will learn to perform assessments of 4 crucial areas: constipation, diastasis rectus abdominus, breathing, and rib cage/diaphragm. Treatment will focus on addressing deficits in these areas as they impact core function. Working on these (partner) aspects of core strength will improve functionality in all areas that require core stability – basic skills including mobility, seating, and activities of daily living; in addition to higher-level skills including handwriting, attention and sports participation. Improved pelvic floor control will also have a profound impact on bowel and bladder control. Improved diaphragm and rib-cage control will also greatly improve breathing and regulation.

When you confidently apply the principles addressed in this course, you will be able to help improve quality of life and function for the full range of students on your caseload.

It’s a win-win!

Objectives

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

  • List 2 muscles groups and describe 3 functions of the pelvic floor
  • Understand the development of the diaphragm and the pelvic floor as it related to bowel and bladder function in pediatrics
  • Describe normal bowel and bladder health in the pediatric population
  • Understand the relationship of constipation and effect on the bladder and pressure systems in the abdomen
  • Understand how bowel function can change the ability of the core to properly activate and cause other motor control disturbances with developmental milestones
  • Evaluate the effects of posture and positioning on the pelvic floor and transverse abdominus muscle recruitment and relaxation.
  • Perform verbal instruction of pelvic floor and transverse abdominus activation
  • Perform 3 different diaphragmatic breathing techniques for pediatric patients including diastasis rectus abdominis assessment with examples of core activation.
  • Analyze the rib cage as it relates to proper core activation and function of the diaphragm
  • Assess when to make a proper referral to a trained pediatric pelvic therapist

Target Audience

Seminar content is targeted to physical and occupational therapists, physicians and nurses. Content is not intended for use outside the scope of the learner’s license or regulation. Clinical continuing education should not be taken by individuals who are not licensed or otherwise regulated, except, as they are involved in a specific plan of care.
