Pre-Recorded Webinar: Supporting Motor Function Through Play

Kimberly Barthel, OTR/L
This is a pre-recorded webinar

  • Part I – Foundations of Movement
  • Part II – Play as Supportive Intervention for Motor Development
  • Part III – Case Examples from Infancy through Adolescence
$60.00 – for one webinar
$50.00 – for two or more webinars

This three-part webinar series will highlight the elements of posture and movement development within play: the primary occupation of children. Play is most often the avenue through which children reach a wide range of their developmental milestones. Whether treating in a clinic, classroom, in a client’s home or virtually, therapists are often challenged in their ability to create playful movement schemes that create long-term functional change. This webinar will combine biomechanics, kinesiological principals and appropriate use of equipment within a play-based lens. This webinar will also provide analysis and intervention for a wide variety of neuro-motor challenges, including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder and mental health issues within the pediatric population. Many ideas for play-based activities will be provided to help fill a therapist’s toolbox.

This webinar addresses children ages birth through adolescence.

Part I

Part I

(2 hours): Foundations of Movement

This session will focus upon the understanding of the foundational biomechanics of movement for everyday function. Participants will develop preliminary observation and analysis skills of posture and movement.

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the biomechanical/kinesiological foundations of movement
  • Develop a preliminary understanding of the analysis of motor function

Part II

Part II

(2 hours): Play as Supportive Intervention for Motor Development

This session will focus upon the neurobiology of play as it contributes to learning and movement. Participants will begin to develop play schemes to achieve identifiable movement outcomes.

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of neurobiological components of play as they contribute to the learning of movement and function
  • Discuss how and when to introduce a range of play-based interventions for motor support

Part III

Part III

(2 hours): Case Examples from Infancy through Adolescence

This session will provide case examples of play schemes to achieve motor outcomes in a diverse diagnoses and age. Examples will be shared both from in-person clinical settings and in sessions that are hosted through virtual platforms.

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop the ability to analyze play schemes that incorporate functional movements from birth though adolescence
  • Gain ideas of what they can do in clinical settings (in-person and virtual) to encourage play that stimulates and reinforces motor function
