This course is designed to understand how a developmental coordination disorder presents and how to assess and treat children with DCD. How to navigate situations when the child doesn’t have a DCD diagnosis and plan and optimize your treatment sessions. This course will provide the therapist with a comprehensive background and the tools to assess DCD. Treatment suggestions and case studies will be provided.

  1. Evaluate and observe the child during assessment or treatment and complete task analysis with provided case studies
  2. Identify ways Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) can impact a child at various ages in school/home and community
  3. Select appropriate accommodations for a child with DCD in order to maximize their function in school/home and community
  4. Choose an evidence-based evaluation tool to address a functional concern/deficit for a child with DCD
  5. Utilize evaluation results to update a practical treatment plan for a child with DCD
  6. Apply an evidence-based treatment strategy to address a child’s motor coordination difficulties.
  7. Understand what DCD is and ways to assist your families in receiving a diagnosis- 
  8. Identify what can be done when there is no diagnosis and the family is unable to obtain one

Melissa Gerber  is a school based occupational therapist for the past 18 years. She began her career at NYU Medical Center-Rusk Institute, where she rotated through adult and pediatric programs. She is the president of 4MYKIDSOT, a private practice conducting preschool and early intervention evaluations and treatment.
